New Line of Women's Clothing

It's been awhile since I posted here. What can I say? It's been a very busy summer...I've been working and playing hard, and traveling a little more than usual.

The big news is I've started to add a line of women's clothing to my Etsy shop, Peggy Collins Photo Art. So far I've added some tank tops. Next up will be short-sleeved chiffon tops. A sublimation technique is used to print my designs and photographs onto the clothing, and since I own more than a few of these tops, I know that the print job is excellent. The tops are super comfortable and can either be for casual wear or a little more dressy, depending on the image that is printed.

Here's a small selection of the tank tops I'm offering so far:

Yesterday I received a tank top with the abstract cat design on the bottom right of the picture (from my new line of artsy pet portrait clothing) and I'm very happy with it! I don't think I'll be able to resist ordering more and I know what a couple of people are going to be getting for Christmas.

Photographing Flowers

I like to make sure I keep learning. I love doing workshops, watching videos, and reading books to learn new techniques. So today, even though I already earn my living as a nature photographer,  I figure I could still pick up some new tips so I've been watching an online workshop on photographing flowers.

When I lived in the city and was just starting photography, flowers were pretty much all I photographed. I haunted the streets looking for gardens that were close to the sidewalk so I wouldn't be invading peoples' personal space. I loved it!

Since moving to a more rural area I've gotten away from shooting flowers as often but after watching this workshop, I'm dreaming about focusing on flower photography once again. Only problem is, they're forecasting possible snow flurries at the end of the week!

Hummingbirds in Winter

We got even more snow today. Our poor hummingbirds. The Anna's hummers over-winter here on the west coast of British Columbia. Normally they just have to put up with a lot of rain but I figure if I can do it, they can do it. This year's been very different though, with many snowfalls and colder temperatures. We have had a few crocuses spring up in the yard but they just keep getting beaten back down. I hope today's snowfall was the last of the season, and I'll bet the hummingbirds wish for the same.

Hoar Frost

We didn't get any snow here today but it's definitely colder again. I noticed the crocuses in our yard pushing their brave little faces through the chilly earth. Tomorrow they're forecasting possible snow again. Please, no! We've all had enough of winter...bring on spring!

Snow Covered Adirondack Chairs

Today was a beautiful sunny day so it's hard to believe that snow flurries might be on the way. But that's exactly what the forecast says. Just when I was thinking that spring was around the corner.

We're not used to much snow on the west coast. Some people don't even bother to put away their Adirondack chairs at the end of summer. But look at what can happen...

Return of the Canada Geese

I've been hearing flocks of Canada Geese flying overhead the past two days, early in the morning before I'm even out of bed. We're still a month away from the beginning of spring but the constant honking of the geese always signals that we're almost there. I can't wait!

Macro Dandelion and Bling

I feel a touch of spring in the air so I thought I'd share one of my favorite dandelion photographs...the seedling is covered in water drops and it makes me think of the flower getting dressed up in its best bling. :-)

Let's spring arrives soon...we've had enough snow for the year!

Anna's Hummingbirds in Winter

Our poor hummingbirds have been putting up with way more snow than usual this winter. Anna's hummingbirds over-winter here on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia where we normally have one or two minor snowfalls each year. But this year has been extreme, with lots of storms and many more inches of snow than usual.

It's amazing to me how a tiny bird like a hummingbird can withstand that kind of weather. One morning I discovered that the two feeders we have out for the hummers were both frozen. I quickly got them thawed out. Then I found a brightly-colored pair of knitted socks that I never wore and cut out a small hole and fitted a sock over each feeder, with the hanging rope going through the hole. That kept the birds' nectar warm enough during the day.

We were thinking of going away in January but couldn't find someone to house sit so we stayed put...I was concerned about the birds that had become dependent on us to take care of them. Does that sound crazy to you? So in the end the hummingbirds saved us some money!

Barred Owl Hunting

I sometimes learn lessons from the animals I observe. Last spring I visited a barred owl that I usually found at the edge of the forest where he hunted. During nesting time in the spring it's more common to see barred owls during daylight hours, so it's easier to get good shots of them.

I got to watch this gorgeous raptor as he (or was it a she?) waited patiently until he heard a rustle in the dry leaves on the ground or in the nearby bushes...I never heard a sound but he did. He would get in position, move his head back and forth a little, and wait for the perfect moment before pouncing. I saw him catch half a dozen snakes. There were a lot of robins around too, and they constantly dive-bombed the owl, even hitting him with their claws, but he took absolutely no notice.

So the lesson I learned from this owl was patience, and especially patience when everybody around you is either trying to distract you or even aggravate you. Keep your focus, no matter what. The situation you focus on may not be as crucial as where your next meal is going to come from, but still...

Bobcat Sighting on the Sunshine Coast

I had an exciting moment this past week. Driving home after hiking with my husband, we saw a bobcat cross the highway. Wow! What a rare opportunity. Luckily there was a place for us to pull over. I jumped out of the car and saw the big cat immediately. Usually they're very hard to spot because they have camouflage down to a fine art. In this case though the bobcat was easy to see against the snow.

After walking a few steps, the bobcat obliged me by sitting down and checking me out while I took his portrait. At one point I looked away to get a better footing. When I looked back, he was gone. I looked and looked but couldn't see him. I walked a few steps back to the car and was just about to get in when I saw him move. He'd stepped into the nearby brush and had become invisible.

At that point he leisurely moved off and was swallowed by the forest.

The whole experience was one I'll never forget. Something happens inside of you when you see a wild animal in its natural habitat.

Sugar Madness on Valentine's Day

Yesterday was Valentine's Day. I spent the day pigging out with my sweetie. We went out for sushi lunch then we went cheesecake shopping. Decided on the cappuccino cheesecake...it was so sweet it made my teeth hurt instantly. So today I'll finish off the cheesecake. Then, and only then, I will behave myself. I will eat lots of veggies. I will. I mean it, I will.
